A BREAKUP POEM

This poem was written some times ago. I wrote it in exercising the rhyme scheme ABABAB, but it turns out to be ABABACACAC. It is quite badly written, as I was still struggling to make lines rhyme with each other. The total number of lines are 10 lines. I haven't tried to regulate the number of syllables of each line, the two longest lines, lines number 6 and 8 are long because of "memory/ries", a three syllable words.

1. Oh you’ve left me, forever escape my sight (11 syllables)

2. Leaving me little hope of gaining you back (11 syllables)

3. I will not put much hope in those dim lights (10 syllables)

4. Nor will I seek the cause of what you lack (10 syllables)

5. Summer breeze recalls our sweet old nights (9 syllables)

6. As winter wind freezes our loving memories (12 syllables)

7. The fire of love, still burns, and shall it burn bright (1) (11 syllables)

8. Enflame the records of your memory (2) (10 syllables)

9. Leave me now, as there is nothing left to cry (11 syllables)

10. May God grant me a fairer lover than thee. (11 syllables)

Notes on sources and inspirations:

(1) This is inspired by the translation of Pushkin:

I loved you; even now I must confess,

Some embers of my love their fire retain;

(2) This is obviously a resonance of Shakespeare's sonnet 55

"Not Mars his sword, nor war's quick fire,

Shall burn the living record of your memory".
